Mushrooms Galore

“The sudden appearance of mushrooms

after a summer rain is one of the more

impressive spectacles of the plant world”

~John Tyler Bonner~

In Michigan, the end of summer rainy days allows for the arrival of  vast amounts of mushrooms all over the woodland floor. Bringing a sense of fascination and wonder, I spend a large amount of time photographing each one. I am slowly going to try to identify each one. I cannot guarantee I will find the correct name for each kind, but I am willing to try. The colors range from a purest white to a deep red. Some mushrooms seem to appear out of nowhere only to be gone before the next day.

The colors of the mushrooms range from a purest white to a deep red. They seem to come in all shapes and sizes; each unique in their own way. Some mushrooms just seem to appear out of nowhere only to be gone before the next day. I would love to attend a course just on identifying Michigan mushrooms.

Of course, I use the different photos of the mushrooms as inspiration for writing about fairy worlds.

Uniquely Beautiful

I know this is a common weed around here. But I find the thistle to be uniquely beautiful. I always get helpful suggestions  that I should cut them down along the edge of the property. In my opinion, the flowering thistle is not harming anyone. I know the bees like them. So I just leave the plant alone.

Lazy Summer Days

In mid-Michigan, the last couple of days has been warm. I mean, the state is being declared a moderate drought zone. Now normally, I don’t mind the heat. But, the added humidity just seems to drain all my energy. So, I have been rather….lazy. Well, lazy for me.

Spending most of my days indoors with the comfort of the fans. I don’t have air conditioning which is an investment I may have to make at some point. I have managed to catch up on some social media networking and writing. And, I even picked up a book for some afternoon reading. So, I guess the warmer days have some benefits. I don’t really want to complain. Because I know in a few months, we will have snow.

But toward the evening hours, I tend to wander outdoors. The one aspect I have noticed, the wildlife seem to be having lazy summer days too. The bullfrogs float in the shallow water along the creek bed’s edge.

I have spotted turtles just lazily floating along. Diving down for a quick cool off and coming back up to the surface to float again.

The forecast is calling for continuous warm days with a chance for a rain shower at some point. I am absolutely convinced if a rain shower occurs, I will be outdoors standing in the middle of the downpour.

Until next time…..peace

Exploring the Underneath

When I am out walking, my mind tends to wander. I wonder what lives in the hollow of the trees, under the lily pads, and beneath the natural debris on the woodland floor. I photograph different areas to use as inspiration for my stories.

Earlier I watched lily pads move in the opposite direction of the wind. I, of course, imagined water fairies playing or gnomes skipping along the large leaves. In reality, the lily pads were moving along due to five little baby ducks swimming around underneath.

I assume the little ducks were hiding from predators. Or perhaps, they were just trying to get some shade from the hot afternoon sun. In any case, I really enjoyed spending time watching the little ducks swim between the lily pads.

Anyways, the little ducks provided me with the inspiration I needed to continue working on my book.

Until next time….peace

The Love of a Sunset

What can I say? Some evenings the mere glimpse of the sunset fills me with love, peace and a sense of joy. Tonight was no exception, the warm Michigan air seemed to help illuminate the emerging night sky.

As nature’s colors shined brightly through the treeline, I found myself transfixed. Yes, I still took over a hundred pictures of the sky and surrounding area. But for a moment, I just stood there. The moment was just magical. The fireflies flew about, the birds sang their chorus with the crickets and the frogs, and I just loved the moment.

With all the deadlines and hustle and bustle of the daily demands, taking the time to watch a sunset should be mandatory.

Until next time….peace

Have a Party With Your Bear Day

Today, November 16, 2015 is “Have a Party with Your Bear Day.” I love these unofficial holidays. I use love sitting up my bears to have a party inside a homemade tent. Spending time outdoors in the tent was the best part of lazy days of summer. My mom would help me construct the tent over the clothes line with three old blankets- two for the side and one for the floor. I would stay out there for hours.

I had tree bears that were my favorite toys. Let me tell you, these bears were well-loved. Two of the bears- a fuzzy brown bear and a Polar Bear were gifts from my grandparents when I was just born. The other brown bear was actually something I won. (Honestly, I think the stuffed bear is the only thing I have ever won).

The local bank was having a contest where you could get a key to try and unlock a small treasure chest. There was no age limit to participate. Can you imagine my excitement when my key unlocked the chest? Inside the chest were a variety of little white envelopes. I can imagine trying to figure out which one to pick. But I finally decided to pick out the one in the middle. I remember, everyone telling me the other envelopes were probably cash prizes. But I didn’t care; I had the best prize, a new brown bear. My best friend from childhood, JJ was with me at the time which makes the memory even better. (He died of cancer when we were 14). On the way home, we placed the bear between us in the backseat of the old van. We thought we were the greatest.

I was so excited to get the bear to go with my other two; the brown bear was their new friend. I remember, spending the entire next day outdoors in my tent. I mean, my bears and I were having a party. My peanut butter and jelly sandwich and Kool-Aid was a fancy party meal.

I still have all three bears. They are sitting on my dresser still watching over me after all these years.

Lovely Summer Nights

“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.”
John Muir

The weather has been absolutely lovely the last few days which gives me lots of time to be outdoors and enjoying nature. The lovely summer nights bring gorgeous sunsets and clear skies for star gazing.

Even though I have been spending a lot of time outdoors, I cannot really say that I have been getting any weeding done. I think some of my flower beds are taking on a mind of their own. The lawn is mowed which makes me content for now. The honeybees have been enjoying the extra wild flowers that seemed to have found their way into my yard. So, I tend to leave them for now.

I am just taking the time to enjoy every moment of this beautiful weather.
