The Locks

I recently received a box full of old photographs. I admit, I thought Christmas came early. One of the photos was this image of a ship passing through the Locks.

The photo had pencil markings. “Watching the Locks from Sault Ste Marie, Canada.” I have seen the Soo Locks from the Michigan side but never on the Canadian side. I guess I will add that to my bucket list.

There’s no date on the photo. My best guess is the 1940s. But I could be wrong with the date. I couldn’t see a name on the ship. I know that would help identify the year.

The Bride & Her Bridesmaids

The bride’s smile is the one thing that I love about this image. Of course, I truly do not know if the other two women with their backs to the camera are bridesmaids. I am basing my guess on the flowers in their hair. But the bride seems to be bidding her friends goodbye as she steps toward her new adventure.

From the type of negative, I am guessing this photo was taken in the early 60s.

Reunion or a Wedding

Judging from the cars (remember I am not an expert), I am assuming the photo was taken in the late 1950s. If anyone can give me any information on the cars’ years, I would love to know.

Of course, I have no way of knowing if the lady was attending a reunion or wedding. But, she does have a picnic basket with a tablecloth down by her feet. The two items made me immediately think of a family reunion. But I know pot-luck style weddings (my favorite) were popular during this time period.

A Writer? A Teacher? A Nature Lover?

For those who follow this blog, you already know I love old photos. But there are some images; I just crave to know more about the person and the circumstances surrounding the photo. This image of a woman sitting at a makeshift picnic table is one of them.

I wonder if the woman is camping with friends. From the overly packed picnic basket, I am assuming she is on a trip. Perhaps, she is at a public park near her home.

I wonder what she is writing. Is she grading her students’ latest papers? Writing letters to loved ones? Keeping a journal of her trip? Or working on a novel? Of course, I will never know.

The picnic basket is overflowing, which makes me think she is there for more than a day. I spotted a loaf of bread with the words “Quaker.” across the package. I can see the coffee pot in the background. There are multiple jars with different contents; one may contain sugar. Perhaps, a jelly is in another jar.

I see a pail for water on the left, which makes sense if she is making coffee over a fire. One aspect that I absolutely love about this photo, no plastic containers or throw away single-serve items. Everything extra is in glass containers.

What do you spot in this photo? Anything different than me?

Woman in a Garden

Studying the photo, I would guess the image was taken in the early 1950s. I am basing my guess on the woman’s hairstyle and the type of negative. What do you think?

I don’t have any information on the photo. She is standing by a cartoony looking character.

The plants toward the back are Holly Hocks. I actually have the red Holly Hocks at my house.

I can see the top of a church peeking over the brick building. From the architectural style,  I am guessing the church is Catholic. I wonder if the brick building is part of the church, perhaps, a Catholic school or hospital.

I wonder if the photo was taken in a public garden. I can imagine a beautiful garden located in the downtown city area.

What do you see when you look at the photo? Did I miss anything?

Vintage Photo: 4 Men

Like most of my photos, I do not have any details on this image.

At first glance, I thought maybe the four men were posing after church services. They do resemble each other appearance. Which left me guessing, maybe they were getting together on Easter Sunday.

But I did notice, one of the women in the background is dressed all in black. Her appearance leads me to think the 4 men were attending a funeral. Do I know for certain, of course not?

Vintage Photo: Family Posing on Steps

The photo features a family standing on the steps in front of a house. Generally, I would like to think the photo was taken for a special occasion, a holiday or a wedding. But often family photos were taken on a day of a funeral.

I do not have any information about this family. My guess…well I am assuming the two men and the women standing in the background are all brothers and sisters. They do resemble one another. Of course, the other woman standing in the front row is holding the one man’s hand. Considering the era of the photo, I would guess they are man and wife.

By the style of clothing, I would date the photo around the late 1940s.

The Women of 818

Old photos are always a wonder to me. I do not have any information about these three women. I can tell they are at house 818. But beyond that, I do not know their story.

I do see a resemblance in their facial features. I am guessing they are related. I wonder if the woman on the right actually lives at 818. She is the only one without a coat. Perhaps, they were getting a quick photo before the other two women left.

Vintage Photo: Dinner Party

Yes, I am guessing they are at a dinner party. Actually, I think they are celebrating a birthday or a small wedding. The candelabras make me think the image may be from a wedding.

When I enlarge the photo, I can see more details including:

  • Gifts on the back table which could be for a wedding, birthday, or other celebration.
  • Champagne or wine bottle on the rectangle table. The front table does have filled wine glasses. At first, I thought the glasses had water in them.
  • The plates in the background have neatly wrapped little boxes. I can assume the boxes are wrapped with napkins with a trinket inside.
  • The man sitting at the front table seems to be unwrapping the box.
  • The second woman on the left is starring down at something which I am assuming was in the boxes.
  • The people at the table are either drinking coffee or tea.
  • There’s a lollipop sitting on the table.

Do you see anything I may have missed?

One aspect I love about this photo, everything is washable. The plates, cups, saucers, coffee pot, and other serving ware are reusable. Personally, I think that is habit we all need to implement in our daily lives.

Vintage Photos: Zoo

Does anyone recognize the zoo in these photos? I am curious to know if the zoo is still open today.

I believe the photos are from the 1960s.

 

I honestly cannot tell what type of animal is in the cage. Does anyone have a guess? Perhaps the creature is a monkey.

 

The photographer apparently enjoyed watching the bears. There were several photos of the bears.

I can’t help but think the one bear looks sad in the photo. I am not a fan of animals in cages. I do advocate rehabilitation and return to the wild when possible.
Of course, this bear does look like he/she is enjoying the attention of the crowd.
Does this bear seem close? I know there was probably a barrier. But animals should be protected from people.
Gibbon…yes I read the sign.
A giraffe…I hope he/she was not alone.

 

I love elephants. I hope to see one in the wild someday.

 

 

 

I am not certain if the duck photo is part of the zoo or not. Without any background, I have no way of knowing. But I know most zoos have ducks and other smaller animals.
