Brothers–August 1943

This image is from another estate sale lot. In my opinion, the two young men look like brothers. I am basing this assumption on their facial features.

The photo does not contain any names. But the back is stamped with the Brown Photo Service, Minneapolis, Minnesota logo with the date August 28, 1943.

Either the young man in uniform is on leave or he has just joined the service. The date is only the processing date of the image.

I wonder if he returned home? The date corresponds with WWII.

Until next time…peace.

Exploring a 1920s Wedding Photo from Bay City, MI

Here’s another photo that I am placing around the 1920s. I am assuming the couple just got married. And, they are now posing for their first photo as man and wife.

I believe this is a studio photo but I guess the location could be someone’s home.

The only identifying mark on the photo is the studio stamp. The photo was taking by Gorzycki in Bay City, Michigan. I think the other part reads: 2249 E. Grant Sts.

What do you think?

Young Girl

I am assuming this young lady was photographed for communion. I am placing the photo around the 1920s.

The photo does not have any identifying marks. The only clue is the name of the studio: Frank Harper Studio at 7719 Harper Ave.

Many of the other photos from this lot were from the Detroit area. There is a Harper Ave in Detroit. But I can only guess that this was the place of the studio.

What do you think?

Baby Osprey

Happy July! I can’t believe it is July already! This year is moving by so fast.

I spent a little time photographing the Osprey this last weekend. I know this isn’t the best photo, but if you look closely at the female Osprey. (She’s the one looking upward). You can see the baby right under her. I only saw one this year. Last year, there were two. And, yes, the male kept staring at me the whole time.

When I photograph this pair of Osprey, I am very far away. I use a large lens to capture the photo. I only stay a few minutes then I leave. I do not want to bother them. Because I want them to keep coming back.

1946 Tornado–St. Johns, Michigan

I pulled these images from slides. I was surprised to find them in my recent estate sale purchase. The previous owner did a lot of traveling. Most of the slides are focused on the trips. I admit, I love seeing their adventures. And, my bucket list is getting a lot of great ideas.

But these slides were focused on the aftermath of a tornado in Clinton County, Michigan.

Each slide has handwriting on them. In pencil are the date, event, and location. The tornado took place in August 1946 in St. Johns, Michigan.

A couple of the slides had extra details like Rudy’s trailer.

The broken trees were on Clinton Ave. I found this interesting. My grandfather lived on Clinton Ave. for years.

There’s no further identifying information on the next three slides.

The sign in the rubble reads, welding. Perhaps, the name on the business sign is Gary.

A lot of people showed up to help.

The next two slides are labeled, “Aunt Nellie’s house”.

I am assuming the lady with the flowered dress is Aunt Nellie.

Tornadoes leave a path of debris and destruction. I am hoping no one was hurt in this event.

I am hoping someone out there can provide more information on this tornado. I did a little research but did not find a lot of information. If I come across my slides from this event, I will definitely post them.

Bay City Wedding

I purchased a large box of 8×10 photos. All the images are beautiful wedding photos. This image is tucked inside a larger folder. The bottom of the top matte reads Agdanowski Studio, Bay City. Unfortunately, there’s no year on the photo. Based on the style of clothing, I would guess early 1920s.

I love the bride’s dress. I wish I could see the color of the flowers. Everyone looks so proper and fine for the wedding day. I think the bridesmaid resembles the bride. I wonder if they are sisters.

Virginia, October 1947, Part 3

I am continuing with the slides marked Virginia, October 1947. The three slides I am sharing today are from Radford, Virginia. I could not find the exact location of these photos or perhaps the place no longer exists.

I believe this is the Governor Tyler Hotel.

I would be grateful if someone out there could point me in the right direction.

Have a good night.

Virginia, October 1947: Part 2

Here is another small group of slides from an estate sale. The photographer was definitely a history buff. I am posting 3 slides today of Mount Vernon. The photos are from George Washington’s Mount Vernon.

The estate is located at 5513 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22309, and is still open for tours today. Another location I need to add to my growing bucket list.

The estate has tours, a museum, and George Washington’s Distillery® and Gristmill which is located 2.7 miles from the main entrance. I do not know if the original Gristmill in the above photo is part of the distillery. I need to research further.

Has anyone ever been here?

Let me know.

Virginia, October 1947: Part 1

Hello, Happy November, everyone! Are you ready for a new month? I have been working on some of my estate purchases. These photos are from a group of slides labeled, Virginia, Oct. 1947.

Then, each slide was written on the cardboard part, too. I love that each one has a little information. The image below is labeled Monticello, VA, Oct. 1947.

The next image is labeled, Thomas Jefferson’s tomb, Oct. 1947.

Now, this place actually still exists. A World Heritage Site, it offers tours of the grounds, a museum, and a historical house. The address of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello is 1050 Monticello Loop, Charlottesville, VA 22902.

Since I am a history buff, the next time I am in Virginia, I would take the tour. Has anyone been here before?

I plan to post more slides from this pack tomorrow.

Exploring a 1925 Communion Photo from Detroit

I picked up a box of photos yesterday from an auction sale. I believe this one is a communion photo. Please correct me if I am wrong.

The photo gives the year: 1925.

The photographer: Frank J. Gorzycki

Location: 7719 Harper Ave., Detroit, Michigan. (I was curious. I researched the location on Google Maps. But, the building is no longer there.)

Unfortunately, there is no name or other identifying information on the photo.

Let me know, your view of the photo.

Until next time…peace.
